From the oldest cave paintings of the Neanderthal age to glyphs carved on rocks, various evidence showcases man’s desperate need to communicate. In time, this want took the shape of sounds and finally a perfectly structured, sophisticated language with set grammatical rules. With this evolution, the importance of language has escalated from merely a want of communication to a question of sustenance in the business arena. Hence, every other organization in the marketplace is looking to hire individuals with excellent language proficiencies, whereas they fall short of avenues to assess their employees’ speaking abilities. To date, over 90 percent of oral proficiency assessment in a corporate setting is conducted by a human interviewer, which consumes a lot of time yet remains inaccurate. And because of the time delays, the organizations lose numerous top candidates with their inability to provide the individuals with a hiring decision in time. This need for an accurate language assessing software does not prevail just in corporate HR, but in different verticals such as education, contact centers, tourism, hospitality, and more. Whereas the glitch in such software development, the requirement of not just the binary outcome of right or wrong rather showing how right and how wrong is the language ability of an individual, remains massive.

Brigham Tomco, an experienced entrepreneur with an extensive background in language learning and international business, encountered the issue of recruiting hundreds of English-speaking employees only to realize the importance of software in a language assessment vertical. He joined hands with Dr. Jacob Burdis, an educationist, who encountered a similar situation in his language school that trains about 25 to 30,000 students a year in 100 different languages. With a mission to close the global communication gap, these two enthusiasts braved the odds and developed Emmersion, a rapidly growing EdTech company that facilitates remote employment screening and placement through its automated adaptive language assessment. Emmersion brings a change to the language assessment vertical through its AI technology, which has shortened the time to assess someone’s speaking ability to an average of 15 minutes and provides an immediate score report. To achieve these desired goals, the company offers two automated assessment products, TrueNorth and WebCAPE.

TrueNorth, the fully adaptive speaking assessment tool, shortens the assessment period by understanding an individual’s speaking ability quicker and delivering the most appropriate question based on the response to the first one. Tomco makes a note of this element of TrueNorth by stating, “The adaptive element of TrueNorth is a true selling point as it scores with our AI algorithms after every question.” With this ability to shrink the speaking assessment time through AI-driven software, TrueNorth gives a breakthrough to the hundreds of millions of jobs globally that require speaking ability by ensuring consistency across locations and interviewees while having a test that can replace the human interviewer. With such benefits in place, TrueNorth covers most of the corporate languages spoken globally with the automated speaking assessment. It has English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, and Japanese right now, and Italian, Russian, Mandarin, and Korean to be released in the near future.

While TrueNorth deals with the speaking ability of different languages, Emmersion introduces WebCAPE, a computerized adaptive placement exam, for other aspects of language ability.

This assessment gains its importance in positions of back-office roles where other aspects of language take over oral communication. For such needs, WebCAPE offers reading and listening components. Thus, Emmersion covers nearly every aspect of language assessment with just the two top-notch products.

Tomco, having explained the efficiency of TrueNorth and WebCAPE, reinstates its necessity in the marketplace with a real-life success story. He narrates the instance where one of the leading BPO organizations in the globe approached Emmersion as a million dollar plus a year customer was about to leave them as the consistency of the employees working on the customer’s account was not meeting the service level agreement in the case of language proficiency. Emmersion applied its TrueNorth speaking assessment with the BPO organization to identify the employees who speak the language up to the level that was acceptable to their customer. TrueNorth helped the organization to get a benchmark of where the speakers must reach to achieve their client satisfaction and used it further on all the new applicants. And a study over a three month period of the TrueNorth application to meet the benchmark reveals that customer satisfaction has taken a massive leap from 70 to 90 percent. In addition to customer satisfaction, Emmersion also aided the recruitment side, as the organization had a long recruiting time of around 24 to 48 hours from the beginning of the application to the job offer. Having made the screening process easier with TrueNorth to find candidates who meet the benchmark, Emmersion shortened their screening process time to just around two hours, saving them hundreds of dollars of human time. Further, as there are numerous call centers and BPO positions across the globe, the applicants apply for more than two or three jobs a day and tend to accept their earliest job offer. Thus, the reduced time consumption in the recruitment process has also facilitated the organization to hire the top employees of the marketplace.

Tomco remarks, “We help companies facilitate remote employment screening and remote placement, which, with COVID, and other digital transformation as key, employees are not coming into the office. And I think that’s one of the key benefits of our product.” With the current work from home trend, the company has API integrations to dozens of applicant tracking systems, HR information systems, and ERPs to support employment screening remotely.

Emmersion, still unsatiated with its striking development, continues to innovate to shorten the assessment, leverage AI, adaptivity, and add other capabilities such as writing and open speech assessments. Emmersion continues to work on developing other languages and skillsets to help its customers, and also build assessments and provide data that helps with the talent development and the employee/learner development component.
